Abstract:Based on NCAR/NCEP reanalysis data, the intensity change of 0814 strong typhoon Hagupit is diagnosed. The results showed that the high SST of the Western Pacific is conducive to the generation of Haqupit, the offshore high SST of Zhejang, Fujian and Hainan contributes to the development and maintenance of Hagupit. At the TC genesis stage, the subtropical high stretches northward and westward, strengthens and maintains its intensity steadily. When the typhoon moves towards the subtropical high, the pressure gradient between them increases, the south easterly wind enables Hagupit to move northwest quickly and strengthen. When the TC entered the South China Sea, the subtropical high maintains and further strengthens westward, but the westerly trough moves eastward so that the typhoon moves northwestward and develops into a strong typhoon. The intensity change of Hagupit is affected by following factors. In the upper troposphere, the strong northeast wind on the eastern side of South Asia high transports high potential vorticity to the typhoon area, and makes Hagupit develop. In the lower troposphere, strong southwest monsoon provides adequate water sources and transports cyclonic relative vorticity to the typhoon zone, and then enables Haqupit to rapidly develop and maintain its strength.
